Sustainable Development in education

Equality, accountability for the environment and the community, and cultural awareness.

Sustainable development at Perho Culinary, Tourism & Business College is part of the tuition in many ways at our different campuses. Studies include subjects such as neighborhood culture and the cultures and customs of other countries. Variety of cultures & their practices as well as international foods and drinks are studied at Perho. Visits to the local cultural sites and events are organized (Hotel and Restaurant Museum, art museums and theater performances).

Tourism students practice travel guidance, students of restaurant field become familiar with international food, and business students have possibility to look at different cultures from the customer service point of view. In addition, some students are either studying or performing their on-the-job learning abroad.

The students of the sustainable gastronomy study module have the opportunity to visit food producers and farms; to see how animals are being raised and what all it takes to grow food on a farm. During the studies of sales and customer service, students have possibility to sell and promote locally produced ingredients.

Responsibility is an important part of teaching and training. In the classroom and learning kitchens, attention is paid to, for example, material procurement and the use of energy and water consumption, recycling and food life cycles. These same themes are also dealt with in business studies. It is important for a customer service provider to be able to advise customers on selecting responsible products such as eco-labeled products. In tourism training, responsible planning and the understanding of sustainable areas of development is part of vocational education.

The campuses also hold sustainable develompent events such as the yearly environmental day at Malmi campus. Töölö and Malmi Campus also organize a Sustainable Development Workshop during Open Doors Days every January.  The aim is to develop environmentally conscious and sustainable lifestyle professionals who develop their qualifications while carrying out their sustainable development skills, knowledge, skills and attitudes.
