Germination of first plants

In this video, Steven Lowndes explains how the germination of first plants were started.

A temporary greenhouse was build where all vegetable and herb plants were grown from seeds or from cuttings. No plants were purchased outside the school.

Most of the leafy and fruiting vegetables produced in Finland are started of as plants in the protected greenhouse environment. With the early plants this means we can start sowing before the outdoor conditions are suitable, and with all plants it means they are already developed enough to get a good start in the relatively harsh outdoor conditions.

The practical work begins in early spring with plant production, and the success of the season ahead will partly depend on the quality, health and timing of these plants.

Visitors were able to purchase vegetable & herb plants.

In 2018 we produced about 20,000 plants, using organically approved seed and peat.
