First aid for burns
The burn is due to the heat or a corrosive chemical substance which induce tissue destruction, in which the skin and possibly also its sub-tissues are damaged.
If your skin is not cooled properly, the injury expands into deeper layers of the skin and the pain persists for a longer period.
- Small burns are cooled down with a cool water until the pain subsides.
- Small burn vesicles or bullae can be covered with a sterile bond or cloth.
- You may need to change the bond once to every second day.
- If the burn becomes infected, you may need to go see a doctor.
First aid for cuts & wounds
Tying the cut and stopping the bleeding are the basic first aid skills.
- Stop the bleeding by applying direct pressure over the wound with fingers or with hand.
- Clean the wound by using clean & cool water.
- Close the small wound edges together with an adhesive tape.
- Cover the cut with a sterile bond or a bandage.
- Seek for an appropriate treatment if necessary.
- Check that your tetanus vaccine is still valid.
First aid for an unconscious person
- Find out first if you are able to get unconscious person awake.
- If unconscious person does not wake up, call 112 and follow the directions.
- Check the breathing of an unconscious person.
- If a person breathes, turn him/her on to the side (the recovery position) to ensure a continuity of breath. This way the tongue does not close the respiratory tract; as well as the vomit and other secretions are able to flow out of the mouth.
- Place the nearest arm of the person you are trying to help at right angle to the body. Bring the furthest arm from you across the casualty´s chest.
- Pull up the casualty´s far leg, just above the knee.
- Grasp the casualty´s shoulder and the bent knee and roll him towards you, until he is lying on his side.
- Hold the back of his/her hand against his cheek.
- Keep his/her head tilted so that airway remains open.
- Watch for the one being helped if he or she is breathing and possible awakening until you get professional help.
